Ride report from Graham for a recent ride below........
Graham HartGH cycle ride #8, Fri Jan 21 2012 - Ulversone to Latrobe Cherry Shed & return - 84.8km
GHowdy, out with the Crusty's B-team this morning, this is two big rides in a row and I pulled up ok. I was up at 6.00 am, gulped down some breaky and pedaled over to Ulverstone to meet up with the 7.15 B-team. As I rode 94km yesterday I was happy just to go with the flow and have an easy pedal in the group. On the way over I looked down and saw I was missing my water botttle, this ended up to be good thing, because I went to woollies to get a sports water (Mizone) and what a good idea that was.
The groop had pretty well decided where to ride by the time I returned for the start and so off we pedaled to Latrobe via Forth and that hill! The group split up on the hill climb (as usual) while I settled into a relaxing pace from the start of the hill climb. I had a drink of this sports water and wammo I was off like Cadel, pedaling like no tommorrow, I reeled them all in by the top and took KOM guernsey.
We regrouped at Braddons lookout Rd and then headed for Latrobe. On the downhill into the Don I reached 72kph, my motorcycling experience had me pass the front rider as he slowed up for the Don river bridge, while I just hung the knee out, kept it all tight and kept up the speed, which put me up to the Don Shop (almost) with out pedaling. Another breather at Stony Rise and then off around through Spreyton to latrobe, pedaling along at 30kph, everyone happy with the pace and rotating well. WE reacked our destination missing one, who we picked up on our return down Gilbert St, then it was a beatifull ride around the picture postcard super still river with kayakers paddling silently along the riverbank, absolutely magic stuff.
Now back to this sports drink, I had consumed half the bottle and feeling pretty good and after the climb up the Walvery Rd hill onto the Highway, I had some more and was ready for the sprint home. A few took off early and got ahead somewhat, which left three of us bringing up the rear. We set a good pace and reeled them in and kept moving. Orb soon got his legs into gear and broke free passing us three, you can't let Orb get a way too far on the flat because he takes some catching, but he slight climb up over the rail line at Leith had Orb drop off and that is where I kicked in with two others.
Once passed the rail line we held 40kph all the way to Ulv. The traditional sprint at Westella was a beauty between a youngester (sorry fella I forgotton your name, old age creeping up) , myself, and launceston Andrew. Well, Andrew give in when youngester passed me and hit the lead, I managed to kick again and meet the challange (Mizone was working for sure) it was a change of lead twice with a photo finish, with us agreeing it was a dead heat. What a ride and I reckon my stamina was due to me drinking Mizone and regularly through the ride.
We had the usual coffee and chat at Crusty's with all the Lycra lovelys (babes and blokes), then I wheeled the MS over to meet up with the Ulysses mob at Banjo's. A great morning of exercise a socialising, untill next Friday when it all happens again at Devonport, see MH's post on Facebook about next week.....GH

Received the email below from Amelia recently.....
Have added a link to our Link page
Hi AllLooking for a new challenge, new experience, holiday or simply need a break? As you know from my previous email, and perhaps you have recieved a few from Joe as well, in June and July 2012, we will be opening a new holiday and training base in the French Alps called Base Camp Morzine. Located at 1000m, Morzine is ideal for altitude training and provides the perfect training and holiday environment for anyone. Base Camp Morzine is located just over an hour from Geneva International Airport and we offer airport transfers. The camp offers a variety of training and holiday options for everyone. Amelia is a level 2 accredited triathlon coach and can assist with you preparation for a specific event or with individual sessions. Joe has a strong events management background and has been involved in the sport of triathlon for more than 10 years and can assist you with anything from bike mechanical issues to entering local events or just general fitness advice. With our own nine seat van, we are happy to assist athletes staying at Base Camp morzine to travel to events in the area (see list below) and we are also happy to assist with organising day trips (again see list below). Chalet Serac is located in a perfect location, just 100mtrs from the pool and a 5 minute walk to the nearest supermarket. Morzine is located Base Camp Morzine will also have a massage therapist available in the chalet for the entire duration of the camp. For further information please go to www.basecampmorzine.blogspot.com Cycling
For road biking we have a choice of amazing routes on the doorstep. The local mountain passes or "cols" made famous by the Tour De France include Col De Joux Plane, Col De LaRamaz, Col De Joux Verte and, still withinpedalling distance, Col De La Colombiere. There are, however, lots of other lesser known but equally as challenging and scenic circuits.
If you can't bring your bike with you, we can (with adequate notice) assist you to rent high quality bikes already geared for the hills from our local bike partners in Morzine. Longer rides during our Tri Camps are accompanied with full vehicle and mechanical support.
Running
For off road running trails, the area is blessed with a variety of super scenic and fun options to keep run training as interesting as it is challenging. The relatively flat 3 km circuit of Lake Montriond provides the perfect combination for Swim-Run brick sessions and there is a choice of 5-10 km forest track loops along the river Dranse. Although every run is not an Alpine climb we are not short on runs with a gradient!.
Swimming
Morzine has an Olympic 50m heated outdoor pool (open end of June till early September) with permanent swimming lanes. Brand new for December 2011 Morzine will have an indoor 25 m pool which will be open all year round. The jewel in the crown however, is our picture postcard lake at Montriond, which is perfect for open water swim training. At 1500 m in length the Lac De Montriond could have been designed for Triathlon; the water is crystal clear but a wetsuit will be required in all but the warmest conditions. Average temperature is between 16-20 degrees for June and July. Lake Geneva, just over an hour's drive or bike from Morzine, is another beautiful open-water swim venue where the water is a always warmer than Lake Montriond.

Email received from Kate Warren this week:
Hey Gav and Crusty boys!!!
Thought you guys may be interested in what I am doing and also maybe consider doing it in the future as a group - it is a fantastic event, challenge and a great way to get together and raise money for a great cause - this year there are several groups of "mates" and it has a really nice feel to it all
See what you think - any donation is greatly appreciated :)
Please be part of my Smiling for Smiddy journey
Everyday more than 300 Australians hear the words "You have cancer". I don’t want someone close to me to have to hear those words.
Last year I was invited to participate in an amazing adventure by my special friends, Tim and Aloka Smith and I am so grateful to them for introducing me to such a wonderful experience that I was lucky to share with them. I completed the Smiling for Smiddy Challenge in 2010 and this year I am too – and going on an extra journey to try to raise more funds. On the 3rd of September I’m cycling the sixth annual Bottlemart Smiddy Challenge. It’s a 1600 kilometre cycle from Brisbane to Townsville over just eight days – that’s 200kms per day! This year, I am also continuing on to ride with Mark "Sharky" Smoothy from Karratha to Esperance in Western Australia as part of his 7 in 7 Challenge. This means I will be completing a total of 4400km on the bike to raise money for cancer during the month of September. (Please see attachment for our route and more information).
I wanted a challenge worthy of my energy and desire to tackle cancer head on. I’ll be going further than I ever have on a bike, inspired by my family, friends and everyone who has been touched by this cruel disease. Seeing the impact it has on loved ones and those closest to them is heart breaking. I want to share with you a heartfelt letter from Smiling for Smiddy founder Mark Smoothy about how the grief of losing a mate, Adam Smiddy to cancer, inspired hundreds of cyclists and thousands of donors, like you, to support cancer research. Please see attachment "Mark’s Story".
Before Smiling for Smiddy, I competed in events solely for personal achievement. Smiling for Smiddy has taught me so much – about myself and the challenge, participating in an endurance event that requires 8-10 hours of riding per day that requires both physical effort and mental strength. The wonderful comradeship and team spirit with the riders, road crew and our supporters is also something I find difficult to describe in words. Most importantly to me, Smiddy gives me the amazing feeling of knowing that I am helping others and is worth more than I can put into words and if I could bottle it up – it would be worth so much! I still compete in events for achievement, fitness and to maintain a healthy lifestyle but I participate with the knowledge of the lessons about what I have learnt during the Smiling for Smiddy event and hold these close to my heart.
Please know that by being part of my support network – you really do give me the extra strength I need to really push through when my legs and my mind are screaming at me to stop. The amount of time on the bike everyday really allows a lot of thinking time and believe me – I think of everyone who is part of my Smiddy journey along the way and I am truly grateful for your involvement.
Please be part of my ‘support crew’ by making a donation to fund cancer research. You’ll take me closer to my fundraising goal of $10 000 (every donation no matter how big or small really helps) and be supporting a range of beneficiaries including Mater Medical Research Institute in areas such as prostate cancer, melanoma and complementary therapies for cancer patients.
Visit my fundraising webpage http://www.smiddyfundraising.com.au/kate_warren_1 where you can make a donation online.
Thanks so much for taking the time to read all about my Smiling for Smiddy journey
Warm wishes to you and your loved ones,
Kate

Report from the Bteam riders.........GH (Graham Hart on the Malvern Star)
GHowdy Le Tour De France viewers, this morning I was out on my Malvern Star with the 7.15am (the slower ones) Sat morning riders - the Crusty's Cycling Bunch
It was no different for us this morning as we agreed to give Sprent a go. Now Sprent is about 15km inland from Ulverstone and rises to about 275m, we had a slight SE wind (head wind). All was all going well for the group untill one bloke broke away at the foot of a reasonabley long hill (a Contador type rider) we let him go for a bit, then about half way up I was feeling prety good in the legs and decided to reel him in. I was on my own at the rear of the peloton on the start of the chase, I rounded up the rest of the group slowly then I had a clear view of the breakaway rider. There was another rider shadowing me (Jamo,) I didn't realise that as I was hell bent in catching up to the lead rider.
About 100m from the top it rises sharply and I was thinking if he doesn't look back and he stands up, I've got him, and I did with a bit to spare. The bloke shadowing me just didn't have the legs to do me, he did about 50m over the top then I realised he was behind me. The bloke we past had no idea there was a challange coming and was taken completely by supprise, he muttered words like, you pair of bar......s. I was stoked I won the poker dot jersey this morning, doubt it will happen again, this bunch is starting to work out my tactics.
Just a bit further on we had a rest where I took this photo,
it is hard to see the snow covered Black Bluff in the background, but believe me it was there, I was lucky the phone/camera worked at all. I'm preparing myself for another ride tomorrow morning - just to be in sync with Le Tour de France.............GH - the Malvern Star kid
PS as a matter of interest, where we stopped and took the photo is the entrance to our family farm where I grew up and started riding a push bike some 45 years ago, I was on a Malvern Star back then too.

Sunday it was back to normal. Roger was late (Again - 1 point) and Doc "Frothy" Fisher got yet another 3 votes for yet another momentary lapse of concentration. With the end only 10 km away it looked like the doc would get a rare clean sheet - but alas it was not to be. With a bit on confusion up front over which way to go, Doc thought he would also go straight from the inside lane when the others in front of him and next to him turned left. Somehow he avoided hitting Galp. The consolation cup made an unwanted reappearance with Phil and Chris getting a vote each for their indiscretion.

A total of 38 riders fronted up for the Crusty’s Christmas Cruise. The peloton rolled down to the front of the Ulverstone shop for the group photo. Thanks to Mark for taking the shots.
The group then rolled out of Ulverstone on its way to the Wivenhoe Crusty’s shop. The group was led out by Captain Fairweather and his ever dependable deputy, Jack. A noticeable absentee from the head of the peloton was “Cannonball” Crezzie. As a result the group enjoyed an easy rollout. Not far out of Ulverstone the dreaded “Puncture” call was ringing out loud with Sarah being the unlucky one. While on the puncture stop Cannonball was overheard saying that he had been deliberately boxed in after the photo shoot and therefore, couldn’t get to the front. Did not hear any complaints from those within earshot.
Sarah quickly changed her tube and the group was soon on its way again. Cannonball was not going to be boxed for a second time and was off like a shot (as usual). Not too long after the calls of “ease up” were coming from the rear of the bunch. The pace then settled down with the group enjoying a tailwind all the way to Wivenhoe.
Upon arriving at the Bakery Pughie marshalled everyone together for another group shot. After much mucking around with his camera he sheepishly called out “must be flat batteries”. Later at the Ulverstone shop Katrina told us it was not flat batteries at all. In fact, Pughie had grabbed the camera and the battery was left on the charger, which was sitting right next to the camera itself. Luckily Wayne came to the rescue and took a couple of shots with his mobile.
After enjoying a coffee compliments of Crusty’s Bakery the grouped headed off on the return trip to Ulverstone. Luckily the wind had eased considerably. Around the same place Sarah had a puncture on the way over the call “Puncture” was heard again. This time Trevor was the unlucky one. After the required tube change the group rolled into Ulverstone incident free. Well most of the group, for reasons only known to themselves the Galpin Express and Jono decided they had to beat everyone else back to the bakery (might have heard a rumour about free food and were worried about missing out).
Upon arrival at the bakery, the group was greeted by tables full of food for everyone. More than one person was heard commenting what a great spread was put on by the Crusty’s team.
After everyone had had a bite to eat and a drink it was time for the presentation of the inaugural “Soft Award”. Third prize was taken out by the Galpin Express, second by Jimmy (a.k.a. Mr Cycling). First place was taken out by none other than “Uncle Philadoor”.
In closing, on behalf on the group I would first like to thank the girls who put up with us every week and occasionally have to bring the mops out to clean up after a wet day. Good work girls. Secondly, I want to sincerely thank Darryn, Katrina, John and Terese for putting on such a great spread for the group on the Crusty’s Christmas Cruise.
Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year to all.
Gav
